Get to know Liz!
I am a small business owner and electrical engineer. My company's name is Hyde Engineering, Inc. and we provide electrical engineering and consulting services for commercial projects. We have worked on projects throughout the state including Protective Stadium, many projects at UAB and Red Mountain Theatre.
I have two incredible daughters, Hannah and Emma. Hannah is an owner and works with me at Hyde Engineering. Emma recently graduated from UAB medical school and is a Psychiatry resident at UAB. When I’m not immersed in work, my heart belongs to family time. With two daughters and four grandchildren, there’s never a dull moment. Cooking is a passion of mine, and our family get-togethers often revolve around good food and great conversations. Of course, football is a staple in our lives—I’m a devoted Auburn University and Buffalo Bills fan, and game days are a tradition in themselves. Outside of family and football, I like to do some form of exercise every day. You might catch me hiking at a local park or walking the dog.
How did you get involved with Childcare Resources?
I was informed about the possible potential to serve on the board, and I found out a bit more through a good friend (and former Board Chair), Jason Bryant. He invited me to attend the annual Fairy Tale Ball, and the rest is history. The work that Childcare Resources does in the community to make a positive impact in the lives of families with children is beyond rewarding. It is invaluable!
Why do you think having quality child care is important?
Quality childcare allows parents to go to work or school knowing their children are well cared for. These parents can go achieve a promotion, start a business, or earn a degree that allows them to secure a better job. It also allows children to learn and grow in a positive environment. These children will start school with a solid foundation of learning and positively impact their future success.
What is your favorite service or program provided by Childcare Resources?
It is so hard to say my favorite thing! I do love the Supplemental Child Care Program. It has a direct impact on families that are struggling, and we have heard story after story of how it has changed the course for someone in a positive way. But when I heard multiple child care providers talking about the Infant Toddler Program, I was amazed at the heartfelt appreciation the providers had for the new skills they learned. Taking care of babies is challenging and having tools in your toolkit to manage it all is essential. Everything Childcare Resources does is centered around improving childcare and making it accessible to as many people as possible. I guess that is what I love the most.
"My time with Childcare Resources has been most rewarding and truly fills me with joy. At a time in my life when I needed it the most. To see the lives that have been touched and changed is amazing."
What are your reflections on this past year in your role as Board Chair?
It has been busy but I can honestly say, I loved every minute of it.
I enjoyed getting to know Joan more and will miss our one-on-ones.
Wrangling a group of Type A board members is probably the most challenging! But seriously, I am glad to have the opportunity to connect with fellow board members and I have made friends along the way.
I learned so much about the agency that I probably would not have if I had not served in this position. I also learned about other non-profit organizations and am inspired to continue serving in this community.
I think it has helped me to better understand what it means to be a part of a community, not just my little circle.
