Inaugural Christopher Sign Award of Distinction awarded to ABC 33/40

Birmingham families return in-person for Central Alabama’s premiere fundraising event

Celebrating the 15th anniversary of a beloved community event, generous supporters, volunteers, and community leaders gathered safely on Saturday, August 28, 2021, for Childcare Resources’ Fairy Tale Ball – an annual event which generates valuable support for children and families across Central Alabama.

For the past fifteen years, the Fairy Tale Ball has brought the magic and enchantment of fairy tales and superheroes to the city of Birmingham, and this year certainly delivered more magic than ever before. Hosted by Childcare Resources, a local non-profit organization and United Way of Central Alabama partner agency that provides information, education,

and assistance to children, families, and child care providers in Central Alabama, the Fairy Tale Ball welcomed philanthropic-minded individuals as they danced the night away, learned about the mission of Childcare Resources, and raised valuable dollars to support children and families in the Greater Birmingham community.

Each year at the Fairy Tale Ball, Childcare Resources honors an individual or organization for their outstanding support of the children and families with the Childcare Resources Award of Distinction. In honor of the former event emcee and dear friend to the agency, the 2021 award was renamed the Christopher Sign Award of Distinction to honor Christopher Sign, the late TV news anchor, his legacy, and his passion for early education support accomplished by the Fairy Tale Ball each year. The newly named Christopher Sign Award of Distinction was presented during the event to ABC 33/40, accepted by this year’s event emcee: Brenda Ladun, evening anchor for ABC 33/40.

“What I loved about Christopher Sign is that he loved everyone he came in contact with, and he made us all better,” said Ladun during her acceptance speech. “Christopher Sign reminded us each and every day in the newsroom that each and every one of us has a gift, talent, and something that we can give to other people.”

ABC 33/40 has actively supported Childcare Resources’ annual Fairy Tale Ball for the past several years, with over one million dollars raised throughout the event’s history to provide thousands of families with essential support and resources they otherwise may not have been able to receive. While this evening is certainly an opportunity to make memories to last a lifetime, the event also creates partnerships for generous community organizations like ABC 33/40. These partnerships further Childcare Resources’ critical work to create quality early learning opportunities and a strong academic start for young children across Central Alabama.

Generous community partners who contributed to the success of Childcare Resources’ Fairy Tale Ball include: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, ABC 33/40, This Is Alabama, ERA King Real Estate, McWane Inc., Protective, The University of Alabama at Birmingham and UAB Medicine, Prophouse Birmingham, Spoiled Rotten Photography, and more.
